Architecture from the medieval to Arts and Crafts
Sadly, Jim Godfrey, who was to be our guide at Beverley, was taken to hospital with a heart attack on 15th March. Fortunately his prognosis is good, and he should make a full recovery, but he will clearly not be able to lead this walk on 3rd April.
Jim had worked very hard in preparing a very interesting tour, which had proved very popular – it was fully booked, with an ‘overspill list’ for a further walk in the Autumn. We hope that, later in the year, when he is fully recovered, Jim will consider rearranging these, and I will send information out first to those whose details I already have, before advertising further.
In the meantime our thoughts are with Jim and his wife Marlene, and we wish Jim a full and speedy recovery.
For your information, details of the cancelled walk were as follows:-

Beverley is bookended by its two great medieval churches with a very interesting selection of buildings and spaces in between.
In the 18th century the town became a social centre in addition to its longer standing roles as pilgrimage, administrative and trading centre. This bought a number of handsome 17th and 18th century town houses, grand gardens and Assembly rooms.
The nineteenth century brought larger industries, railways and middle class people needing nice houses, shops, chapels, libraries etc. With these came the well known nineteenth century eclectic architectural styles.
Our walk will take in this great variety of building styles, an architectural encyclopaedia for a day. Our leader will be YPS member and Beverley resident Jim Godfrey, who has a wealth of knowledge of the town.
There will be quite a bit of walking, including some unpaved lanes before lunch, so you will need to wear suitable shoes.
Outline for the day.
From bus station visit Beverley north of Saturday market. (This is the name of the area where the market is held)
Lunch time various options in Saturday market and nearby. After lunch visit Beverley south of Saturday market finishing at Beverley Minster, time permitting. There may be an opportunity to stay for a service at the Minster – the programme should be available in late February.
*The start of the walk is timed to allow travel from York to Beverley via the X46/X47 bus, which leaves York Railway Station at 9.55 am, and takes a pleasant route through the East Yorkshire countryside.
Details of the bus route and timetables can be found on a very informative website, https://www.eastyorkshirebuses.co.uk/services/EY/X46 which will also provide updates in the event of changes to the service. If you prefer, you can download a paper timetable here:-X46-timetable If needed, we can mail you a copy if you send a SAE – see form below
