In April 2014 an air quality episode started a media frenzy with headlines such as Londons invisible killer and Return of the Killer Smog filling the newspapers and grabbing our attention. This episode was unusual because the pollution being reported on could be seen both in the air and on peoples cars. Modern air pollution is generally invisible so without instrumentation to measure what is in the air it is impossible to see how bad the pollution is and to understand the causes; thats where the work of atmospheric chemists like those working in the Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories at the University of York becomes really important. Find out about where air pollution comes from, why it is interesting to scientists and why, whether you are a scientist or not, you should be interested too!
