Our ability to learn and remember is essential for maintaining our idea of self from one moment to the next and recalling our personal history over many decades. How does the brain perform such an incredible feat? Dr Gareth Evans, a lecturer and neuroscientist at the University of York, will give a colourful overview of synapses, the fascinating connections between the billions of neurons in our brains. Gareth will use examples from his own research on the molecules found inside synapses to illustrate their ability to rapidly change in the learning brain. He will also discuss whether so-called ‘smart’ drugs are the answer to our fading memories as we age.
